Day of the Establishment of the Slovak Republic celebrates the official dissolution of Czechoslovakia. On 1 January 1993, Czechoslovakia amicably split into the Slovak and Czech Republics. Upon the split, both countries established their own parliamentary democracies and Slovakia has adopted new symbols and flag to represent its state. The Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic maintain good ties and their separation is often referred to as the Velvet Divorce.
